Starting Lineup

Sallinger · Mayor · Iredale · Ivezić · Passlack · Mulligan · McGrath · Cadden · Boyle · Passlack · Elding

Hibernian prioritizes a direct and vertical style of play through a 4-4-2 formation. This lineup is built to win the second ball and move the opposition back quickly once possession is regained. By using two banks of four, the team seeks to maintain compactness and exert pressure on the opponent in their own half.

Sallinger stands between the posts to organize the defensive unit. The back line operates as a flat back four with Mayor and Passlack acting as the wide defenders. Mayor provides width on the left while Passlack covers the right flank. In the center, Ivezić and Iredale form a central pairing where they must defend zonally and clear the lines when under pressure. The unit works to hold the line and squeeze the space to prevent runners from finding gaps between the defenders.

The midfield functions as a four man block designed to control the central areas. Mulligan sits as a single pivot to shield the defense and intercept passes. Beside him, McGrath and Cadden work to connect the defense to the attack by carrying the ball forward. Passlack operates on the right side of the midfield to provide additional width and support the wing. This group is tasked to press in a mid-block and ensure that the opponent cannot play through the lines easily.

Hibernian utilizes two forwards in a partnership to lead the attack. Elding acts as a pressing centre-forward to force the opposition back line into mistakes. Boyle plays as a second striker in the hole to find space between the lines and link up with the midfield. The attack relies on runs in behind and the ability of the forwards to hold up the ball. When the team wins the ball, they look to hit in behind on the transition or whip it in toward the target man.

A major strength of this formation is the ability to press in coordinated waves. The two banks of four make it difficult for opponents to find passing lanes through the middle. Hibernian can also create wide overloads when the full backs push up to support the midfielders. This allows the team to switch play quickly and isolate wide players in one on one situations.

This 4-4-2 lineup focuses on a hard working defensive block and rapid transitions. It is best suited for games against teams that struggle to play out from the back under heavy pressure.
