Derby Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Zetterstrom · Sanderson · Morris · Ozoh · Clark · Szmodics · Brewster · Robinson · Ward · Hedges · FuseiniDerby relies on a high press and heavy verticality within a 5-3-2 formation. This lineup is built to win the ball high up the pitch and strike quickly through the center or using the width provided by the wing backs. The goal is to squeeze the space in the middle and force the opposition into wide areas where they can be trapped.
Zetterstrom sits between the posts to manage the defensive line. The back five consists of Ozoh and Sanderson acting as the central block, while Robinson plays as the left centre back to provide cover. Ward and Hedges operate as attacking wing backs, tasked with stretching the opposition. Ward provides width on the right, while Hedges pushes forward to support the left flank. The unit defends zonally, with the central trio of Ozoh, Sanderson, and Robinson holding a compact line to deny any space between the defenders.
The midfield functions as a three man midfield with a carrier. Clark sits in the single pivot role to shield the defence and intercept passes. Beside him, Fuseini and Brewster work to connect the defensive and attacking lines. Fuseini acts as the left sided runner, while Brewster drives forward with the ball to break the line. This trio works to compress the midfield, ensuring that if they lose possession, they can immediately trigger a press to win it back high up the pitch.
Up front, Derby uses two forwards in a partnership to pressure the opposition back line. Morris plays as the left striker to press from the front and hunt for loose balls, while Szmodics operates as the right striker to find pockets of space. They attack in combinations, often looking to receive on the half turn or play a one two to bypass defenders. The wing backs, Ward and Hedges, provide the necessary width to allow Morris and Szmodics to stay central and pin the last defender.
One major advantage for Derby is the ability to create wide overloads from the overlapping wing backs. When Hedges and Ward push up, they force the opposition to defend more space, which creates gaps for Brewster and Fuseini to exploit. Additionally, the formation offers great compactness when defending, as the five defenders and three midfielders can quickly drop into a low block if needed to protect the lead.
This 5-3-2 formation is designed for teams that want to dominate transitions and strike with speed. It is best suited for matches against opponents who play with a high line and leave space behind their defenders.
