CSKA-Sofia plays a highly vertical brand of football using a 4-2-4 formation. This lineup is built to attack with high intensity and win the ball back quickly. The goal is to stretch the defence and create constant pressure on the opposition.

In goal, 77 stays alert to command the area. The defence uses a flat back four with a high line to squeeze the space. 72 at right back and 73 at left back push up to support the attack. In the middle, 76 and 72 act as the central defenders, tasked to hold the line and cover for the advancing full backs. They must be ready to step up and set the offside trap when the opposition tries to play through the lines.

The midfield consists of a double pivot with 75 at RCM and 75 at LCM. These two work to shield the defence and protect the back four. One of the 75 midfielders will drop between the centre-backs to receive the ball and help play out from the back. They must also work to compress the midfield and intercept passes before the opponent can progress through the thirds. These players connect the defensive unit to the heavy front line by carrying the ball forward.

The attacking unit is extremely aggressive, using two forwards in a partnership with 77 and 76. These two strikers act as a pressing centre-forward duo to force the opposition into mistakes. On the flanks, 71 at RW and 72 at LW provide width and can cut inside to create chances. The team looks to break quickly and hit in behind on the transition. The wingers often try to get to the byline and cut it back to the two strikers arriving late into the box.

CSKA-Sofia gains a massive advantage from their ability to press from the front in coordinated waves. By committing four players to the attack, they create a heavy load for the opposition defenders. Another strength is the speed of transition, as the 75 midfielders can quickly find the feet of the striker or switch play to the wide players. This formation forces the opponent to defend in large areas of the pitch.

This 4-2-4 formation is all about aggressive, direct attacking and high-intensity pressing. It is best suited for games where the team needs to break down a low block or overwhelm an opponent through sheer numbers in the final third.
