Shakhtar Football Formation
Starting Lineup
PYATOV · SRNA · RAKITSKYI · MATVIYENKO · KUCHER · TYMOSHCHUK · MARLOS · STARUKHIN · TAISON · VOROBEY · SOKOLOVSKYShakhtar focuses on direct vertical play to catch opponents out of position, utilizing a 4-2-4 formation. This lineup aims to pin the opposition back and create rapid attacking transitions. By spreading the pitch wide, Shakhtar intends to stretch the defence and create space for the forwards to run in behind.
In goal, PYATOV acts as the last line of defense. The back four consists of SRNA at right back and MATVIYENKO at left back, both of whom are expected to push up to support the play. KUCHER and RAKITSKYI operate as the central defensive pair, tasked with holding the line and winning the second ball. KUCHER provides stability on the right side while RAKITSKYI covers the left, working together to defend zonally and intercept passes before they reach the strikers.
The midfield relies on a double pivot to bridge the gap between the defence and the heavy front line. TYMOSHCHUK and SOKOLOVSKY work to shield the defence and recycle possession when the team needs to reset. TYMOSHCHUK can drive forward with the ball to help move the play through the thirds, while SOKOLOVSKY looks to win it back high up the pitch and provide a link to the attackers. This pair must be disciplined to prevent being bypassed by central runners.
Shakhtar employs four attackers to overwhelm the opposition's defensive unit. MARLOS and TAISON play as wide wingers, with MARLOS looking to cut inside and TAISON using his pace to threaten the flank. They are supported by a central partnership of STARUKHIN and VOROBEY, who act as two pressing centre-forwards. This front line is designed to press from the front and win the ball high, creating chances for quick combinations or allowing the wingers to deliver early crosses into the box.
This formation offers several tactical advantages. The team can create wide overloads by using the full backs to overlap the wingers, forcing the opposition to defend in much larger spaces. Additionally, the heavy presence in the final third allows Shakhtar to pin the last defender and create constant pressure through high pressing in coordinated waves.
Shakhtar utilizes this 4-2-4 to force a long ball from the opponent and exploit space on the break. It is best suited for matches where the opposition plays a high line and can be caught on the transition.
