Roma Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Suárez (DC) · Sterling (ED) · Jovetić (EI) · M’vila (MCD) · Pjanić (MC) · Marchisio (MC) · Bisevac (DFC) · Barzagli (DFC) · Zanetti (LD) · Nagatomo (LI) · Rafael CabralRoma focuses on a high press and quick transitions using a 5-2-3 formation. This lineup aims to win the ball high up the pitch and hit the opposition on the break before they can set their defensive lines. The goal is to create chaos in the final third by using wide players to stretch the pitch while maintaining a solid core to prevent counter attacks.
Rafael Cabral sits between the posts to manage the defensive line. Behind a central trio of Bisevac, M’vila, and Barzagli, the team maintains a back five that can shift into a narrow defensive block when under pressure. Bisevac and M’vila act as the central anchors, while Barzagli provides cover to his side. Zanetti and Nagatomo function as attacking wing backs, pushing high to provide width and crossing ability, but they must track back quickly to protect the flanks and ensure the back five remains intact.
The midfield operates as a double pivot to control the center of the pitch. Pjanić acts as the deep lying playmaker, looking to recycle possession and play through the lines with his long range passing. Beside him, Marchisio works to connect the defensive and attacking lines, often stepping up to press aggressively or making late runs into the box. This pairing is responsible for shielding the defense and ensuring the team can transition from a mid block to an attacking stance.
In the final third, Roma employs three attackers to pin the last defender. Suárez acts as the central striker, using his hold up the ball abilities to link with the wider players. Jovetić plays on the left as an inverted winger, looking to cut inside and create chances, while Sterling occupies the right flank to stretch the defense and make runs in behind. These three forwards press the opposition back line constantly, aiming to force a long ball or a turnover that allows them to break quickly.
This formation provides significant tactical advantages through its width and compactness. The overlapping runs from Zanetti and Nagatomo create wide overloads that pull defenders out of position. Additionally, the combination of a three man central defense and a double pivot in midfield makes it very hard for opponents to find space between the lines. Roma can also switch play rapidly to isolate Sterling in one on one situations on the wing.
Roma utilizes a compact defensive block and rapid attacking transitions. This formation is best suited for matches against teams that play with high defensive lines or struggle to deal with wide players.
