Starting Lineup

Prass · Laimer · Danso · Lienhart · Seiwald · Schlager · Kalajdzic · Baumgartner · R. Schmid · Chukwuemeka · Zawieschitzky

Austria looks to dominate through high intensity and verticality in a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup focuses on heavy pressing and winning the ball back high up the pitch to catch opponents off guard. The tactical intent is to squeeze the space and move the ball forward quickly through the middle and wide areas.

Zawieschitzky acts as the last line of defense while the team maintains a very high line. Danso and Lienhart operate as a central pair of defenders who must be ready to cover huge amounts of ground behind them. Because there are only two center backs, Danso and Lienhart must be dominant in the air and quick to intercept any long balls played over the top. This defensive unit relies on the midfielders to prevent the opposition from playing through the lines.

The midfield is the engine room for Austria, utilizing a five man unit to control the center of the pitch. Laimer and Prass form a double pivot to shield the defense and win the second ball. Seiwald and Schlager act as two inverted eights who connect the defense to the attack by carrying the ball forward. Chukwuemeka plays as an attacking ten behind the striker to find pockets of space. This heavy midfield presence allows the team to win it back high up the pitch and recycle possession through quick short passes.

Up front, the team utilizes three attackers to pin the opposition back line. Kalajdzic acts as a target man to hold up the ball and win headers, providing a focal point for the attack. On the flanks, Baumgartner and R. Schmid act as wide wingers who can either pull wide to stretch the defense or cut inside to attack the near post. The movement of Kalajdzic allows Baumgartner and R. Schmid to make runs in behind or receive the ball in space. The forwards press in pairs to force the opponent into errors.

The main strength of this formation is the ability to create numerical superiority in the midfield. By crowding the center with Laimer, Prass, Seiwald, Schlager, and Chukwuemeka, Austria can dominate possession and compress the midfield. Another advantage is the capacity to press in coordinated waves, using the front three to trigger the press while the midfield unit pushes up to squeeze the space. This makes it very difficult for opponents to build out from the back.

Austria uses this aggressive formation to overwhelm opponents through sheer physical intensity and midfield control. It is a setup best suited for games where the team needs to dictate the tempo and hunt for goals through high pressure.
