Lorient looks to dominate the center of the pitch and control matches through a highly congested midfield using a 2-6-2 formation. This lineup focuses on suffocating the opposition in the middle third to ensure constant ball retention. By packing the central areas, Lorient intends to recycle possession quickly and force errors from opponents who try to play through the center.

The defensive side of this formation relies on a very shallow back line consisting of only two central defenders, Romao and Benatia. Without full backs to provide width or cover the flanks, Romao and Benatia must play as ball playing defenders who can step up to intercept passes and manage large amounts of open space behind them. The goalkeeper sits behind this duo, acting as a sweeper to collect long balls that bypass the two central defenders. This setup requires the defensive unit to stay extremely compact and rely on the midfield to prevent any direct service to the strikers.

In the middle of the park, a massive six man group manages the game through various roles. Mendy sits in a deep lying playmaker role to shield the defense, while Jallet or Koscielny works alongside him to protect the center. The midfield continues with Romao or Bakakyoko and Aiyew or Obertan in the central areas to drive forward and win the second ball. Higher up, R.Guerrerio and Giuly act as two tens in the half spaces to link the deep midfielders with the attack. This massive block is designed to compress the midfield and deny the turn to any attacking players.

The attacking structure utilizes two forwards in a partnership to stretch the defense. Gignac or Aboubakar leads the line as a pressing centre forward to harass the opposition back line. Alongside them, Rafael Moura or Aiyew operates as a second striker in the hole to find pockets of space between the lines. While the two forwards stay central, the wide attacking midfielders, R.Guerrerio and Giuly, provide the necessary width to create chances. This setup encourages the forwards to play one twos and look for runs in behind the opposition defense.

Lorient gains a significant tactical advantage through numerical superiority in midfield, making it nearly impossible for opponents to find passing lanes through the center. The sheer volume of players in the middle allows the team to win the ball back high up the pitch and immediately transition into attack. Another strength is the ability to create wide overloads when Giuly and R.Guerrerio push high to support the two strikers.

This formation is built for heavy possession and overwhelming the central zones of the pitch. It is best suited for games against teams that rely on a narrow attacking style or struggle to play out from the back under pressure.
