Argentina National Football Team Formation
Starting Lineup
Lautaro · J. Alvarez · Paz · Mastantuono · Mac Allister · E. Fernández · Molina · Barco · L. Martínez · Romero · MartínezArgentina aims to control the game through high pressing and verticality in a 2-5-3. This formation is built to squeeze the pitch and win the ball high up the pitch to catch the opposition out of position. By using a narrow midfield, the team seeks to dominate the central areas and quickly transition to the attackers.
Martínez starts between the posts to sweep behind a high line. The back line consists of a two man central defence where L. Martínez and Romero act as the primary blockers. Romero provides aerial strength and aggression to win headers, while L. Martínez covers space and steps into midfield when necessary. This small defensive unit must remain compact to prevent long balls from bypassing the press.
The midfield functions as a five man block that dominates the center of the pitch. Barco and Molina work as a double pivot to shield the defence and recycle possession. Mac Allister and E. Fernández operate in the half spaces to connect the defensive and attacking lines, with Mac Allister using his passing range to split the defence with a through ball. Paz plays as an attacking ten behind the striker to press aggressively and find pockets of space between the lines.
The attacking line uses three attackers to stretch the defence. Lautaro acts as a pressing centre forward who holds up the ball and pins the last defender. J. Alvarez and Mastantuono play as wide attackers, with J. Alvarez looking to cut inside and Mastantuono to find space on the flank. The team builds the attack by playing through the lines to find Lautaro, creating runs in behind or allowing the wingers to isolate a one on one wide.
Argentina gains a massive advantage through numerical superiority in midfield. This central density allows the team to win the second ball and keep possession in tight spaces. Additionally, the high press triggered by Paz and Lautaro creates waves of pressure that can force a long ball or a turnover in dangerous areas.
This lineup is designed for high intensity and aggressive ball recovery. Argentina will find success against teams that struggle to play out from the back under pressure.
