Custom Team Football Formation
Starting Lineup
A (.) · B · C · D · E · F · G · H · I · J · GkA desire to strike quickly on the transition defines this team and their 4-4-2 formation. This lineup is built to play vertical football, looking to move the ball from defense to attack with minimal touches. The team aims to sit in a compact block when out of possession and then launch direct attacks as soon as they win the ball back.
In goal, Gk acts as the last line of defense. The defensive unit operates with a flat back four, where J and I provide width as full backs. J must track back to defend the flank, while I looks to support the attack. In the center, H and G form the core of the defense, focusing on winning the second ball and clearing the lines. H and G work together to defend zonally, ensuring the space between them remains tight to deny the turn of any oncoming attackers.
The midfield utilizes a double pivot to control the center of the pitch. F and E sit in front of the back four to shield the defense, with F acting as a defensive anchor to intercept passes. E connects the defensive and attacking lines by recycling possession and finding the wide players. Ahead of them, C and D operate in the half spaces as two tens. D is tasked to drive forward with the ball, while C looks to pick up runners and play through the lines to find the forwards.
The attacking unit features two forwards in a partnership. A and B work closely together to lead the press from the front, trying to force a long ball from the opposition. B acts as a target man to hold up the ball, allowing A to make runs in behind. They use combinations in tight spaces to break the line of the opposition defense. The aim is to use the width provided by the midfielders to spread the defense, before delivering a cross to A or B in the box.
This formation offers significant advantages in terms of compactness when defending in a mid-block. By keeping the lines close together, the team makes it difficult for opponents to play through the middle. Another strength is the speed of transition, as the proximity of the double pivot to the two forwards allows for quick vertical passing. This allows the team to catch opponents off balance before they can set the offside trap.
This 4-4-2 lineup is built for a direct and high tempo game. It is best suited for facing teams that dominate possession but struggle to deal with rapid counter attacks.
