Starting Lineup
Borowy (1) · Szablewski (4) · Feter (8) · Szychulski (2) · Szczerbicki (14) · Kwaśniewski (5) · P. Jankowski (18) · R. Jankowski (11) · Kaczorowski (17) · Będziak (19) · Kowalczyk (7)Focusing on a low block and defensive solidity, this team operates in a 5-4-1. The formation is built to absorb pressure and hit teams on the break through quick transitions. By keeping the distances between the lines very small, the team forces opponents to play around the perimeter rather than through the middle.
Borowy stays between the posts to command the area and organize the defense. The back line functions as a narrow defensive block featuring three central defenders, Feter, Kwaśniewski, and Szczerbicki. Feter acts as the central anchor to win the header and clear the lines, while Kwaśniewski and Szczerbicki provide cover and side protection. On the flanks, Szychulski and Szablewski act as attacking wing backs, tasked with providing width when the team wins the ball but needing to track back quickly to form a back five when defending.
The midfield works as a flat four to maintain compactness. Kaczorowski and R. Jankowski occupy the central roles to shield the defence and win the second ball. Kaczorowski works to disrupt play in the middle, while R. Jankowski connects the defensive and attacking lines by recycling possession. P. Jankowski and Będziak operate on the left and right sides, respectively, to provide cover for the wing backs and press in a mid-block to prevent the opposition from turning.
In the attacking third, Kowalczyk acts as a lone striker and a target man to hold up the ball. The plan is to use Kowalczyk to pin the last defender and wait for support. When the team transitions, Szychulski and Szablewski push up to support the attack, creating wide overloads. The goal is to find Kowalczyk with direct passes or to exploit the space left behind the opposition defense by making runs in behind.
One clear advantage of this lineup is the ability to maintain compactness when defending deep in their own half. The presence of five defenders makes it very difficult for teams to find gaps in the middle. Another strength is the capacity for wide overloads, as Szychulski and Szablewski can quickly join the midfield to create numerical superiority during a break.
This 5-4-1 formation is designed to be defensively solid and difficult to break down. It is best suited for facing teams that dominate possession and leave space behind their high line.
