Starting Lineup

Bórquez · J. Rojas · Parot · Aguirre · Escobar · Fuentes · Llantén · Meneses · L. Valencia · Castro · G. Sosa

FC Midtjylland aims to win the ball back high up the pitch through a heavy press, utilizing a 4-5-1 formation. This lineup is built to maintain a compact block and strike quickly once the ball is recovered. By packing the central areas, the team focuses on controlling the tempo and forcing the opposition into wide areas where they can be squeezed.

Bórquez sits between the posts to command the defensive area. The back line operates as a flat back four, with Escobar and J. Rojas acting as the full backs to provide width. Aguirre and Parot form the central pair, where Aguirre functions as a ball playing defender while Parot focuses on staying tight to the striker. The unit works to hold the line and stay narrow to deny any through balls, while the full backs must track back to stop crosses.

The midfield is a dense five man unit designed to dominate the central zone. Llantén and Fuentes act as a double pivot to shield the defence and recycle possession. Ahead of them, Meneses and Castro operate as inverted eights, looking to drive forward with the ball and arrive late into the box. L. Valencia connects the defensive and attacking lines, often dropping deep to receive and switch play. This grouping allows FC Midtjylland to compress the midfield and deny the opposition time on the ball.

In the attacking phase, the team relies on a lone striker, G. Sosa, who plays as a pressing centre-forward. G. Sosa works to pin the last defender and fight for every long ball to create chances for the oncoming midfielders. While the attack is built through short passes from the midfield, the team is also ready to hit in behind on the transition. The wingers or wide midfielders must pull wide to stretch the defence, creating space for the central players to combine in tight spaces.

One major advantage of this formation is the ability to press in a mid-block and win the second ball through sheer numbers. The numerical superiority in the middle of the pitch makes it very difficult for opponents to play through the lines. Additionally, the compactness when defending ensures that very little space is left between the lines for the opposition to exploit.

This 4-5-1 formation creates a hard unit that is difficult to break down in central areas. It is best suited for games against teams that want to hold possession, as FC Midtjylland can sit deep and counter at pace.
