Starting Lineup

D. Sánchez · Cornejo · Gazzolo · M. Fernández · Salinas · Galani · Camargo · Chandía · P. Rodríguez · Zavala · Johansen

Coquimbo focuses on a compact and reactive way of playing using a 4-5-1. The team looks to sit deep and wait for the opposition to make mistakes before looking to hit in behind on the transition. This formation is built to control large areas of the pitch through a dense midfield bank while maintaining a disciplined defensive line.

D. Sánchez stays between the posts to anchor the back line. The defense operates as a flat back four with Salinas acting as the right back and Cornejo playing as the left back to provide width. M. Fernández and Gazzolo occupy the central roles where they must defend zonally and protect the space behind the midfield. The unit works to hold the line and keep the distances between the defenders and the midfielders very small to deny the turn to any attacking players.

The midfield works as a five man block to squeeze the space in the center of the pitch. Galani and Camargo form a double pivot to shield the defense and win the second ball. In front of them, Zavala, P. Rodríguez, and Chandía occupy the central and half spaces to connect the lines. Chandía and Zavala look to win the ball high up the pitch when possible, while P. Rodríguez connects the defensive unit to the forward. This group aims to recycle possession and quickly find the outlets once the ball is won.

Johansen acts as a lone striker who must hold up the ball and work hard to press the opposition back line. The attacking movement relies on the midfielders making late runs into the box to support the lone forward. Coquimbo builds play by using the wide midfielders to spread wide and provide options for a cross. Johansen must often fight for long balls to allow the five midfielders to move forward and join the attack in combinations.

One major advantage for Coquimbo is the density in the middle of the park which makes it very hard for opponents to play through the lines. The double pivot of Galani and Camargo provides security that allows the other midfielders to push up. Additionally, the team can shift between a mid-block and a low block easily to keep the shape compact. This makes it difficult for the opposition to find gaps between the defensive and midfield units.

This formation is designed to be defensively solid and rely on quick transitions. It is best suited for matches against teams that dominate possession where Coquimbo can exploit the space left behind.
