Starting Lineup

Morgan · Whately · Martin · McCartney · Whitmarsh · Shearman · Mulholland · Dylan Halpin · Markey · Lubimovs · O'Kane

Focusing on defensive solidity and quick transitions, this team operates in a 4-5-1 formation. The lineup is built to sit in a compact block and wait for the right moment to break. By clogging the central areas, the team aims to frustrate the opposition and force them into wide areas where they can be contained.

Morgan stays between the posts to organize the defensive unit. The back line consists of a flat back four with McCartney acting as the right back and Whitmarsh playing as the left back. Both full backs are tasked with maintaining a narrow defensive block to prevent through balls. In the middle, Whately and Martin act as the central defenders, with Whately focusing on winning the second ball while Martin provides cover. This unit works to squeeze the space between the lines to deny any room for attackers to turn.

The midfield is a dense five man group designed to control the tempo and win possession in the middle third. Shearman and Mulholland form a double pivot to shield the defence and disrupt passing lanes. In front of them, Markey, Dylan Halpin, and Lubimovs occupy the half spaces to connect the defensive and attacking lines. Markey works to recycle possession, while Dylan Halpin and Lubimovs look to carry the ball forward to relieve pressure. This midfield group is tasked with pressing in a mid block to force long balls from the opponent.

In the attacking phase, the team relies on a lone striker, O'Kane, to lead the line. O'Kane acts as a target man to hold up the ball and wait for the midfield to push up. Because the team uses wide wingers within the midfield five, the attack often builds through overlaps from McCartney or Whitmarsh to provide width. The goal is to use the movement of Dylan Halpin and Lubimovs to create runs in behind. When the team wins the ball, they look to hit in behind on the transition to catch the opposition defense off guard.

This formation offers significant advantages through its ability to maintain compactness when defending. The presence of the double pivot with Shearman and Mulholland creates a strong barrier that is difficult to penetrate. Additionally, the team can achieve quick transitions by using the work of the wide midfielders to support O'Kane. This allows for sudden bursts of play that can catch a high defensive line out of position.

The 4-5-1 formation provides a reliable way to absorb pressure and strike on the break. This lineup is best suited for matches against teams that dominate possession and require a disciplined defensive display.
