As we all know, Vicente Del Bosque has been using this 4-3-3 formation for quite a while in UEFA EURO Cup 2012 and it is very effective.

What happens in this formation is that they are all not on the same levels as each other because it is important to make sure that they have space from each other and that is what Spain are doing right now containing the ball for the most of the time, until they find open spaces that makes them very dangerous to their opposition.

On the defending aspects, this formation is good too because when the opposition has the ball, the way Spain defend is that there is a player in front of the ball handler and there are two other players that press the ball handler from the back and two more just hovering outside of the "triangle trap" just in case that the ball crosses to the other side because there is going to be another triangle on the other side. This corners the ball handler to the sidelines and if the ball handler manage to escape the first 3 defenders there is another triangle defense waiting for them.

Basically 3 person defending for the ball and 2 more.
