5 to defend and 5 to attack......at all times......provides balance...the most talented midfielders have been pitted together...so they make play....vermalen and arteta sit back and soak up pressure...this formation also allows vermalen to make his runs into attacking areas...i think the problem could be in terms of width of play this formation allows.
