Mexico once again witnessed the celebration of skills. This time from Argentina - to be specific from one particular Argentinian - without doubt their greatest - Diego Armando Maradona Franco. (Mexico hosted 1970 World Cup too, which was won by a magnificent Brazil.)
1986 World Cup witnessed the complete dominance of Maradona, thus being compared with the great Pelé of Brazil.
Perhaps the genius of Maradona was most evident in the quarter-final, semi-final and the final. In the quarter-final against England, following his first controversial goal, he scored the Goal which was voted as the individual Goal of the century by FIFA. Belgium in semi-final witnessed another Maradona show, while the telepathic pass from Maradona to Burruchaga sealed the final for Argentina.
Although Maradona was well supported with a tight defense at the back, but he more than coordinated Argentina's effort and won the World Cup almost single-handedly. This was the second time a single player was so influential in a team's World Cup triumph after Garrincha in 1962. Never again a single player would dominate the World Cup this much, and win the World Cup too.
