Amid the controversies, no one can deny that César Luis Menotti's side brilliantly co-ordinated by Mario Kempes, Passarella, Ardilles and a magnificent fluidic Football, reminisced the glorious days of "La Nuestra". Menotti himself being a Football romantic, allowed his players to play an attacking blend of Football, which was a refreshing change to the increasingly defensive European football.
Although the Argentina-Peru match is marked for Peru's controversial defeat by the large margin which was required by the hosts Argentina to qualify and send the favourites Brazil out; Argentina was remarkably brilliant in almost every match that they played.
The Final of the 1978 FIFA World Cup was contested between hosts Argentina and The Netherlands. The match was won by the Argentines in extra time by a score of 3–1. Mario Kempes, who finished as the tournament's top scorer, was named the man of the match. The Netherlands lost their second World Cup final in a row, both times to the host nation, after losing to West Germany in 1974.
The final is mired in some controversy as the Dutch accused the Argentines of using stalling tactics to delay the match. The host team came out late and questioned the legality of a plaster cast on René van de Kerkhof's wrist, which the Dutch claimed allowed tension to build in front of a hostile Buenos Aires crowd. The Netherlands refused to attend the post-match ceremonies after the match ended.
"La Nuestra", as revisited by Menotti's side remained a pledge to the glorious days of Argentinian Football.
