Lineup (4-2-3-1)

An attacking-minded formation that utilises a narrow, creative midfield to cultivate a quick, penetrating passing style through the oppositions defence, rather than around it. Width is provided by the attacking full-backs, but crosses are few and far between other than that. The holding midfield player is partnered by a more dynamic box-to-box midfielder who provides a threat from runs that arrive late into the attack from deeper, harder to pick up positions. The free-form, pass-and-move, possession style of player from the three attacking midfielders makes goals from midfield very common, while a small, technical gifted centre-forward can drop deeper to involve himself in build-up play and provide assists, as can the box-to-box midfielder with his driving runs forward. The two centre-backs show great discipline in order to guard against an ever-present counter-attacking threat, as the holding midfielder screens them, and covers the gaps left by sojourning wing-backs as they over-lap going forward.
