Alonso or his successor Veratti is playing DM - the first middlefielder in front of the defence, feeling the gaps, initiating the action.
Than there is the main creator of the game - Modric, participating in most of the actions, first player to attack the ball in case of lose. There is also Khedira if more physical strength is needed and young Casemiro.
There are two creative players responsible of shaping the action, assisting: Ozil and Isco. Each one is operating nearer the centre or the wing, depending on Ronaldo's current position. Their substitutes are Kaka and young Jese.
Ronaldo is operating as a free electron, mainly attacking from the wing.
Finally there is a typical striker Suarez, showing himself on the side or stretching the defence by leaving the space for Ronaldo.
Benzema could play on both attacking positions, there is also room for young Morata.

This system is demanding the offensive play of side defenders who must fill in for the not typical wingers.
