Starting Lineup

Norway looks to play a highly aggressive and vertical game using a 2-4-4 formation. This lineup aims to overwhelm the opposition through heavy numbers in the final third and rapid transitions. The tactical goal for the national team is to pin the opponent back and create constant chaos in their defensive lines by pushing the ball forward as quickly as possible.

Nyland guards the goal while the defense operates with a very high line. The back two consists of Østigård and Ajer, who must act as covering defenders to sweep behind the high line when the team loses the ball. These two center backs need to be ready to sprint back if the opposition tries to hit in behind on the transition. Because there are only two central defenders, they must be dominant in the air and quick to intercept any long balls played toward the striker.

The midfield acts as a central engine to connect the defense to the attack. Berge sits in the middle to shield the defense and win the second ball, while Aursnes operates alongside him to drive forward with the ball. Meling and Ryerson occupy the wide areas in the midfield line, acting as wide midfielders who can spread wide to provide width or tuck in to help the center. This midfield quartet is tasked with recycling possession and ensuring the ball moves quickly from the back to the front four.

In the attacking phase, Norway utilizes four forwards to stretch the defense. Haaland and Sørloth play as a strike partnership, with Haaland using his physical strength and Sørloth acting as a partner to hold up the ball and find the feet of others. Ødegaard operates from the left side, often cutting inside to play through the lines or create chances with his exceptional passing range. Bobb stays on the right wing to provide width and looks to get to the byline to deliver crosses.

A primary strength of this formation is the ability to press high in coordinated waves to win it back high up the pitch. The heavy presence of four attackers makes it easy to squeeze the space and force a long ball from the opponent. Additionally, the team creates wide overloads by using the wingers and wide midfielders to isolate defenders in one on one situations.

This aggressive 2-4-4 lineup is built for high intensity and rapid attacking bursts. It is best suited for matches where Norway can catch the opponent in transition or dominate through sheer attacking numbers.
