Barcelona favors a high possession game with a heavy emphasis on ball retention and suffocating the opponent in their own half. This setup utilizes a 2-5-3 formation to control the center of the pitch. The lineup is built to dominate the game through short passing and constant movement in the attacking third.

Ter Stegen acts as the goalkeeper, playing a vital role in playing short from the back to start attacks. Behind him, the defensive unit consists of a narrow two man back line featuring Araujo and Cubarsí. Araujo provides aerial strength and physical dominance, while Cubarsí acts as a ball playing defender to progress the ball through the thirds. This high line requires the defenders to step up to catch opponents offside, leaving the center of the pitch very open if the initial press fails.

The midfield is extremely dense, functioning as a five man block that covers every lane. Koundé operates as the right midfielder to provide stability, while Balde pushes high as the left midfielder. In the center, De Jong serves as a deep lying playmaker to recycle possession and connect the lines. Merino and Gavi work in the central areas to press aggressively and win the second ball. Pedri plays as the attacking ten in the hole, using his passing range to find players between the lines.

Barcelona employs three attackers across the front to stretch the defence. Robert works as the main striker to hold up the ball and pin the last defender. Nico plays as an inverted winger on the left to cut inside, while Yamal occupies the right flank to isolate defenders in one on one situations. The front three press from the front to force a long ball from the opposition, allowing the midfield and defenders to regain control.

One major advantage is the numerical superiority in midfield, which makes it very difficult for teams to win the ball back. Another strength is the ability to create wide overloads when Koundé and Balde push forward to join the attackers. The compactness of the five man midfield allows the team to squeeze the space and deny the turn to opposing players.

This 2-5-3 formation is designed for total dominance and controlling the tempo of the match. It is best suited for games where the team faces deep sitting opponents that they need to break down through constant ball circulation.
