Starting Lineup

Astrálaga · Balde · Koundé · Araujo · Cubarsí · De Jong · Gavi · Pedri/Fermín · Lewandowski · Lamine · Ansu

Barcelona aims to control the ball through a high line and constant pressure using a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup is built to dominate the ball in the middle of the pitch and use heavy numbers in the final third to break down compact defences. The team seeks to suffocate opponents by pushing high up the pitch to win the ball back immediately after losing it.

Astrálaga sits between the two central defenders to help play out from the back. Cubarsí acts as a ball playing defender who can pass through the lines, while Araujo provides cover and physical strength to defend against long balls. Because of the high line, these two must stay alert to step up and catch attackers offside. This narrow defensive line relies on the midfielders to squeeze the space in front of them to prevent direct passes.

The midfield acts as a five man unit that controls the tempo of the game. Koundé plays as a right defensive midfielder to shield the back two, while Balde occupies the left defensive midfield role to provide balance. De Jong operates as a deep lying playmaker who connects the defence to the attack with his exceptional passing range. Gavi provides intense pressing to win the ball high up the pitch, and Pedri/Fermín plays as an attacking ten to operate in the half spaces.

The front three focuses on creating chaos through movement and technical ability. Ansu plays as an inverted winger on the left to cut inside and look for goal, while Lamine operates on the right to stretch the defence and take on defenders one on one. Lewandowski acts as the lone striker and target man, holding up the ball to allow the midfielders to join the attack. This attacking unit works to pin the last defender and create space for late runs from the midfield.

This formation offers significant advantages through numerical superiority in the middle of the pitch. By using five players in the central zone, Barcelona can easily recycle possession and find passing lanes that others cannot see. The team also gains the ability to press high in coordinated waves, making it very difficult for the opponent to build play from their own goalkeeper.

Barcelona utilizes this aggressive formation to force the opposition into mistakes through sustained pressure. It is a lineup best suited for games where the team needs to break down a team that sits deep in a low block.
