Barcelona Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Ter Stegen (C) · Araújo · Cubarsí · Koundé · Balde · De Jong · Pedri · Gavi · Fati · Yamal · OlmoBarcelona aims to dominate the game through extreme ball retention and high pressing in a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup is built to occupy wide areas and force the opposition into mistakes. The team looks to push high up the pitch to squeeze the space and win the ball back immediately.
Ter Stegen (C) acts as the goalkeeper and plays a vital role in playing short from the back. The defensive unit consists of a high back two with Araújo and Cubarsí acting as the central defenders. Araújo uses his strength to win the header and handle physical threats, while Cubarsí works to play out from the back and intercept passes. Because the back line is so shallow, these two must step up to catch attackers offside and cover the space behind them. They defend zonally to keep the team compact.
A five man midfield provides the engine for Barcelona to move the ball through the thirds. De Jong operates as a single pivot to shield the defence and drop between the centre backs to receive. Gavi and Pedri play as two inverted eights in the half spaces, where Gavi presses aggressively to win the ball high and Pedri uses his passing range to find teammates. Koundé and Balde occupy the wide areas to provide width, with Koundé acting as a right winger in possession and Balde pushing forward on the left. This midfield unit connects the defence to the attackers by recycling possession and switching play.
The attack uses three players across the front to pin the last defender. Fati plays as a central striker to hold up the ball and find the feet of his teammates. Yamal and Olmo act as wide attackers who cut inside to create more central presence. While Yamal looks to isolate a one on one on the flank, Olmo moves into the gaps to find space. This formation creates many runs in behind and allows the team to attack in combinations in tight spaces. The front three press from the front to force a long ball from the opposition.
This formation offers massive numerical superiority in midfield which makes it hard for opponents to intercept the ball. The use of Koundé and Balde provides wide overloads that stretch the defence and create space for the central players. The ability to press high in coordinated waves allows the team to win it back high up the pitch.
This 2-5-3 formation focuses on total control and high intensity pressing. It is best suited for games where Barcelona faces a low block and needs to break the lines through constant ball movement.
