Lens Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Samba · Gradit · Danso · Medina · Frankowski · Machado · Mendy · Diouf · Sotoca · N'Zola · Pereira da CostaFocusing on high intensity and quick transitions, Lens operates with a 3-5-2 formation. This lineup aims to win the ball high up the pitch and use the verticality of the players to punish teams in transition. The goal is to squeeze the space in the middle while maintaining enough width to stretch the opposition.
Samba guards the goal as the primary line of defense. Ahead of him, a back three consisting of Medina, Danso, and Gradit maintains a compact defensive block. Medina and Gradit act as the wide centre-backs to cover the flanks, while Danso sits central as the dominant presence in the air to clear the lines. The unit defends zonally, ensuring they stay close together to deny passing lanes through the middle.
The midfield engine relies on a three-man midfield with a carrier and an attacking ten. Diouf and Mendy work to control the central area, with Diouf looking to press aggressively to win the ball high. Pereira da Costa operates as an attacking ten behind the two strikers, looking to find space between the lines and play through the lines. Frankowski and Machado act as attacking wing backs, pushing high to provide width and helping to recycle possession when the central players are closed down.
In the final third, Lens uses two forwards in a partnership. N'Zola and Sotoca lead the line, with N'Zola often looking to run in behind the defense while Sotoca works to hold up the ball and link up play. The wing backs, Frankowski and Machado, provide the width by overlapping the attackers to deliver crosses into the box. This movement creates combinations in tight spaces and forces the opposition defenders to step up, leaving gaps for the midfielders to arrive late into the box.
A major strength for Lens is the ability to press high in coordinated waves, using the front three and the attacking ten to trigger a press. The formation also offers wide overloads when Frankowski and Machado push forward, creating two on one situations against opposing full backs. This setup allows the team to transition from a mid-block to an attacking stance very quickly.
This 3-5-2 formation provides a balance of central strength and wide attacking threat. It is a setup best suited for facing teams that play with a high defensive line and can be caught on the break.
