Starting Lineup
Zubimendi (Christensen) · Dani Olmo (Gavi) · F. De Jong (Fermin Lopez) · Pedri (Chiesa) · Lamine Yamal (Raphinha) · Lewandowski (Pau Victor) · Cubarsi (I.Martinez) · R.Araujo (E.Garcia) · J.Koundé (H.Fort) · A.Baldé (A.Valle) · Ter stegenBarcelona focus on controlling the ball and squeezing the space through a high press in a 5-2-3 formation. This lineup aims to dominate the pitch by keeping possession and using wide players to stretch the defence. The team looks to win it back high up the pitch to keep the opposition pinned in their own half.
Ter Stegen plays behind a back five that can shift into different looks depending on the ball position. Zubimendi acts as the central figure in the back three, while R.Araujo serves as the right centre back and Cubarsi plays on the left. Both R.Araujo and Cubarsi provide strength and cover to maintain a high line. On the flanks, J.Koundé operates as a right wing back to provide width, while A.Baldé pushes up as a left wing back to overlap and carry the ball forward.
The midfield relies on a two man unit to connect the defensive and attacking lines. F. De Jong works to carry the ball forward from deep and recycle possession, using his driving running style to bypass the midfield. Dani Olmo plays alongside him to create in the half spaces and find the feet of the striker. This pair must work to protect the back five and ensure they do not get bypassed on the transition.
Up front, the team uses three attackers to pin the last defender and create chances. Lewandowski acts as the lone striker, using his positioning to hold up the ball and arrive late into the box. On the wings, Lamine Yamal stays wide to isolate defenders one on one, while Pedri plays on the left and looks to cut inside to create passing lanes. This front three works to press from the front and trigger a press when the ball is lost.
A major advantage for Barcelona is the ability to create wide overloads through the wing backs. When A.Baldé and J.Koundé push high, they create extra options to switch play and cross on the run. The formation also allows for compactness when defending, as the wing backs can drop back to form a narrow defensive block. This makes the team very difficult to break down through the middle.
This formation creates a heavy presence in the final third to overwhelm the opposition. It is best suited for matches where the team wants to dominate the ball and restrict the opponent to long balls.
