Starting Lineup

Hoever · Osho · Jubal · Joly · Owusu · Raveloson · Traoré · Perrin · Sinayoko · Bair · Leon

Auxerre utilizes a 4-5-1 formation to maintain a reactive and compact identity. This lineup is built to play as a mid block unit that waits to win the ball before looking to strike on the transition. The team looks to control the center of the pitch to deny space between the lines.

Leon stays between the posts to organize the defensive unit. The back four consists of Hover at right back and Joly at left back, while Osho and Jubal act as the central pair. Hoever and Joly provide width when needed but often stay closer to the center to maintain a narrow defensive block. Osho and Jubal must hold the line and win the second ball to stop direct attacks. They work together to cover space and ensure the line stays tight.

In the middle of the pitch, the midfield is designed to control the center. Raveloson and Owusu sit deep as a double pivot to shield the defense. Perrin, Traoré, and Sinayoko operate in the central zones to link the defense to the attack. Raveloson and Owusu work to intercept passes and win the ball high up the pitch when the team triggers a press. Perrin and Sinayoko look to carry the ball forward and play through the lines, while Traoré helps to recycle possession and shift the play.

The attacking phase revolves around Bair playing as a lone striker. Bair is tasked to hold up the ball and wait for support from the advancing midfield. Because the midfield is so crowded, the team often looks to find the feet of the striker or knock it in behind the opposition defenders. Sinayoko and Traoré often make late runs into the box to support the lone man. This movement forces the opposition back line to stay deep, creating space for the midfield to carry the ball forward.

This formation offers several key tactical advantages. The main strength is the numerical superiority in midfield, which allows the team to compress the midfield and make it hard for opponents to play through the center. Another benefit is the compactness when defending in a mid block. This makes it difficult for the opposition to find gaps between the lines, forcing them to play wide and commit to crosses. Finally, the lineup allows for great speed of transition when Bair can hold the ball or play a one two to release runners.

The 4-5-1 formation makes Auxerre a difficult side to break down in central areas. It is a lineup best suited for facing teams that dominate possession and require a compact unit to frustrate their movement.
