Hull aims to control the game through high pressing and heavy numbers in the middle of the pitch. This 2-5-3 formation is built to squeeze the opposition and dominate through central superiority. By using five players in the middle, the team intends to win the ball back high up the pitch and keep the play moving forward quickly.

In goal, Pandur acts as the last line of defense. The defensive unit operates with a narrow back two consisting of Jones and Hughes. Because there are only two central defenders, they must hold a high line to keep the team compact and squeeze the space between the lines. Jones and Hughes need to be ready to cover the channels and step up to intercept passes. They must stay close together to prevent the opposition from playing through the middle, often relying on the midfield to win it back before the ball reaches the back line.

The midfield is where the bulk of the work happens for Hull. A central trio of Zambrano, Coyle, and Giles works to control the tempo and shield the two defenders. Zambrano acts as the anchor to deny the pivot, while Coyle and Giles look to drive forward with the ball and connect the defense to the attack. Ahead of them, Puerta and Mehlem operate in the half-spaces as attacking midfielders. Puerta and Mehlem press aggressively to win the ball high up the pitch, looking to quickly play through the lines once possession is regained.

The attacking line uses three players to stretch the defense. Kamara leads the line as a lone striker, tasked to hold up the ball and wait for support. On the flanks, Millar and Belloumi act as wide wingers who stay high to pin the last defender. Millar and Belloumi often look to cut inside to create central overloads or get to the byline to deliver a cross. The movement of the front three is designed to create runs in behind and provide options for the midfielders to play through the lines.

One major advantage for Hull is the massive numerical superiority in the midfield. Having five players in the middle makes it very difficult for opponents to find passing lanes. Another strength is the ability to press high in coordinated waves, using the front three and the two attacking midfielders to trigger a press. This high intensity can force a long ball from the opponent, allowing the central defenders to clear the lines and start a new attack.

This formation is built for teams that want to dominate territory through aggressive pressing and central control. It is best suited for games against opponents who struggle to play out from the back under pressure.
