Starting Lineup

Raphinha · Yamal · Olmo · Pedri · Lewandowski · deJong · Kounde · Balde · Martinez · Araujo · Terstegen

Barcelona relies on heavy possession to control games and dominate territory through a 4-3-3 formation. This lineup aims to control the tempo of every match by keeping the ball and using short passes to move the opposition. By controlling the ball, FC Barcelona can dictate where the game is played and limit the chances of the opponent to move forward.

Terstegen acts as the goalkeeper, playing out from the back to start the buildup. The back line consists of a flat back four, with Kounde at right back and Balde at left back. Kounde often tucks in to provide stability, while Balde acts as an attacking wing back to provide width. In the center, Araujo and Martinez form the defensive pairing. Araujo uses his aerial strength and recovery speed to cover space, while Martinez acts as a ball playing defender to help move the ball into midfield.

The midfield functions with a three man midfield with a carrier. deJong connects the defensive and attacking lines by dropping between the centre backs to receive the ball. Pedri works in the half spaces to create chances and receives on the half turn to keep the play moving. Olmo plays as an attacking ten behind the striker, finding pockets of space to link the midfield to the attack. This group works to recycle possession and win it back high up the pitch when they lose it.

The attacking front line uses three attackers across the front. Lewandowski acts as a pressing centre forward who holds up the ball and pins the last defender. Yamal plays as an inverted winger on the right, cutting inside to create goal threats. Raphinha occupies the left wing, often staying wide to stretch the defence before cutting inside himself. The forwards press the opposition back line to force a long ball and create chances for quick transitions.

One major advantage of this formation is the ability to create numerical superiority in midfield through the movement of Olmo and Pedri. The team can also create wide overloads from the overlapping runs of Balde and Kounde. This allows Barcelona to pin the opposition in their own half and maintain heavy pressure.

This 4-3-3 formation is built to dominate teams that struggle to handle high pressure and ball retention. It is best suited for matches where Barcelona wants to control the rhythm and isolate wide players in one on one situations.
