Hellas Verona focuses on a defensive identity built to absorb pressure and strike on the break using a 4-5-1. This formation is designed to sit in a compact block and limit space between the lines while waiting for the right moment to transition. By occupying the midfield with five players, the team seeks to congest the central areas and frustrate the opposition.
Tim Krul stays between the posts to manage the defensive unit. The back line functions as a flat back four with Evans acting as a defensive wing back to cover the wide areas. Rossi provides the left side of the defense, while Suchy and Tasci act as the central pairing to protect the middle. Suchy focuses on winning the header during set pieces and Tasci works to cover the space behind the line. This unit maintains a narrow defensive block to ensure they are hard to break down.
The midfield is a five man unit that works to control the tempo and protect the back four. Captain Blake leads the group from a deep position, often acting as the anchor to shield the defense. Mario Suarez works alongside him in a double pivot to help win the second ball and recycle possession. Further forward, Djalma, Pandev, and Bodmer operate in the half spaces to connect the defense to the attack. Bodmer helps to compress the midfield, while Pandev and Djalma look to press the opponent to win it back high up the pitch.
The attack relies on a lone striker, Russell, to lead the line. Russell is tasked to hold up the ball and wait for the midfielders to push forward. He works to pin the last defender to create room for late runs into the box from the midfielders. When Hellas Verona wins the ball, the wingers or central midfielders look to hit in behind on the transition. The goal is to use the width provided by the full backs to stretch the defense and deliver crosses into the box for Russell to attack.
This formation offers great compactness when defending in a mid block. By having five players in the middle, Hellas Verona can easily create numerical superiority to stop through balls. The team also relies on the speed of transition to catch opponents out of position. This allows them to move from a deep position to an attacking one very quickly once the ball is recovered.
The 4-5-1 lineup is built to be defensively solid and resilient. It is best suited for matches against teams that dominate possession where Hellas Verona must sit deep and counter at pace.
