Starting Lineup

HAALAND · DANI OLMO · YAMAL · WILLIAMS · PEDRI · CASADO · ARAUJO · CUBARSI · BALDE · KOUNDÉ · UNAI SIMON

Barcelona focuses on an aggressive, high pressing style of play using a 4-2-4 formation. This lineup is built to win the ball high up the pitch and attack with extreme verticality. The goal is to pin the opposition in their own half through constant pressure.

Unai Simon operates as the goalkeeper to launch attacks. The back four plays a high line to squeeze the space and compress the midfield. Araujo provides aerial strength and physical presence in the heart of the defense, while Cubarsi acts as a ball playing defender to help play out from the back. Kounde plays a more defensive role on the right, whereas Balde pushes up as an attacking full back to provide width. The defensive unit works to intercept passes and force the opponent into long balls.

The midfield consists of a double pivot with Pedri and Casado. Casado is tasked to shield the defense and win the second ball. Pedri connects the defensive and attacking lines by dropping deep to receive and then looking to play through the lines. Pedri uses his passing range to move the ball quickly and switch play to the flanks. This midfield pairing must be ready to press in a mid-block if the initial high press fails.

The attacking front line uses two wide wingers and two central attackers. Williams and Yamal act as inverted wingers who cut inside to create space for overlaps. Dani Olmo plays as a second striker in the hole to find pockets of space between the lines. Haaland serves as a pressing centre-forward who can hold up the ball and run in behind. This front four aims to isolate wide players in one on one situations and deliver crosses to the far post.

A major strength is the ability to create wide overloads and numerical superiority in the final third. The coordinated waves of a high press make it hard for teams to play short from the back. Barcelona also excels at speed of transition, looking to hit in behind on the transition the moment the ball is won.

This 4-2-4 formation is a high risk, high reward system built for offensive dominance. It is ideally suited for facing opponents who struggle to play out from the back or play with a high defensive line.
