Starting Lineup

Ter Stegen · Koundé · Christensen · Martínez · Martín · De Jong · Gavi · Fermín · Yamal · Williams · Lewandowski

Barcelona relies on high intensity and control through a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup aims to win the ball back high up the pitch and control the game through heavy possession. By pushing bodies into the middle and wide areas, the team looks to dominate the ball and create constant pressure on the opposition back line.

Ter Stegen acts as the goalkeeper, often playing as a sweeper behind the defensive line. The back line consists of a narrow pairing of Christensen and Martínez. These two central defenders act as ball playing defenders who must step up to squeeze the space and play short from the back. Because there are only two outfield defenders, they must be ready to cover wide areas or intercept long balls when the team loses the ball.

The midfield is a dense block designed to control the center of the pitch. De Jong acts as the deep lying playmaker who drops to receive and progress through the thirds. Gavi provides intense pressing and works to win the second ball, while Fermín plays as the attacking ten in the hole to connect the lines. On the flanks, Martín and Koundé act as wide players who provide the width for the team. Koundé and Martín must manage the wide areas to prevent being caught out on the transition.

In the attacking phase, Barcelona uses three forwards to stretch the defence. Lewandowski acts as the central striker who holds up the ball and looks to find the feet of the striker. On the wings, Yamal and Williams operate as wide attackers. Yamal tends to cut inside from the right to create chances, while Williams uses his pace to run at defenders. These three forwards press from the front to force a long ball and create turnovers in dangerous areas.

This formation offers significant numerical superiority in the midfield to dominate possession. The wide players allow for wide overloads when they push higher to support the wingers. This setup also allows the team to press in coordinated waves, making it very difficult for opponents to play out from the back.

The 2-5-3 lineup focuses on total dominance and high pressure. It is best suited for games where Barcelona wants to pin the opponent into their own half and control the tempo.
