Starting Lineup

Aberdeen prioritizes a high press and verticality through a 4-3-3. This lineup is built to win the ball high up the pitch and move it forward quickly to catch the opposition out of position. By using this formation, the team aims to stretch the defence and create many chances through direct play and rapid transitions.

The defensive unit starts with the GK in goal to organize the line. A flat back four forms the base of the defence, consisting of the RB, LB, and two central defenders. The RCB and LCB must be ready to step up to squeeze the space or drop into a low block if the team is under pressure. The RB and LB provide width and can push up to overlap the winger or track back to defend against wide attacks. This back four works together to defend zonally and hold a compact shape when the team sits deep.

In the middle of the pitch, Aberdeen uses a three-man midfield to control the tempo. The LCM and RCM work to protect the central area and win the second ball, while the AM plays as an attacking ten behind the striker. One of the central midfielders acts as a carrier to drive forward with the ball, helping to connect the defensive and attacking lines. The AM focuses on finding the feet of the striker and playing through the lines to create chances. This midfield trio must work hard to press in a mid-block and deny the turn to opposing midfielders.

The attack features three players across the front line to maximize pressure. The LW and RW act as inverted wingers who cut inside to attack the near post or create space for the full backs. The ST operates as a pressing centre-forward to force a long ball from the opposition. When the team is in possession, the LW and RW will often pull wide to stretch the defence before moving into central areas. This creates runs in behind and allows for quick combinations to split the defence with a through ball.

This formation offers several tactical advantages for Aberdeen. The team can create wide overloads from overlapping full backs when the LW or RW moves inside. There is also an ability to press high in coordinated waves, which can force many turnovers in the final third. By using three attackers, the team can also isolate wide players in one on one situations during a quick break.

Aberdeen relies on this high intensity 4-3-3 to dominate territory and force errors. It is a formation best suited for games where the team needs to dictate the tempo against a side that sits deep.
