Aberdeen focus on a high press and quick transitions when playing in a 5-2-3. This formation allows the team to stay compact while maintaining enough width to hurt opponents on the break. The goalkeeper begins the build up play as the defensive unit sits in a back five. A central defender sits in front of the line to act as a shield, while the RCB and LCB hold a narrow defensive block to protect the central zone. The RWB and LWB act as attacking wing backs who push high up the flank to provide width. These wide defenders must track back quickly to ensure the team does not get caught out by long balls. The central defenders focus on winning the header and clearing the lines when the opposition crosses.

A two man midfield acts as the engine room for Aberdeen. The RCM and LCM operate in the central channels to connect the defence to the attack. One midfielder often drops to protect the center, while the other drives forward to carry the ball forward into the final third. This pairing works to intercept passes and win the second ball in the middle of the park. They must be ready to press in a mid block to prevent the opposition from playing through the lines.

The attacking unit utilizes three players across the front to stretch the defence. The ST acts as a lone striker to hold up the ball and pin the last defender. On the flanks, the LW and RW function as wide wingers who stay near the touchline to pull the opposition wide. These attackers are tasked to press from the front, forcing the opposition to play long. When the team breaks quickly, the LW and RW look to cut inside to create central threats or get to the byline to deliver a cross.

This formation offers significant tactical advantages such as wide overloads from overlapping wing backs and a strong central presence.
