Starting Lineup

QORIY · LONG · ZAHIN · RAFFI · MIRUL · HAZIM · ARSHAD · AKIM · LARN · SYAZWAN · HAIQAL

Malaysia wants to play a vertical and attacking game using a 4-2-4. This formation is built to push the opposition back and strike with high speed. The team looks to move the ball forward quickly to catch the opponent out of position and hit them on the transition.

HAIQAL plays in goal to command the area and organize the unit. The team defends in a back four with LARN as the right back and SYAZWAN as the left back. LARN can overlap the winger to provide width, while SYAZWAN must track back to cover the wide space. AKIM and ARSHAD act as the central defenders to win the header and clear the lines. They work to hold the line and maintain a compact block to deny the turn of any oncoming attackers.

The midfield is a double pivot featuring MIRUL and HAZIM. They work to shield the defence and win the second ball. MIRUL can drop deep to receive the ball and help play short from the back. HAZIM needs to carry the ball forward to connect the defence and the attack. Both players must press in a mid-block to prevent the opponent from playing through the lines and they must be ready to pick up runners.

The attacking line uses four players to stretch the defence. ZAHIN and RAFFI play as wide wingers to pull the defenders apart. ZAHIN stays on the left and RAFFI on the right, looking to get to the byline and whip it in. In the center, LONG and QORIY act as a strike partnership. They aim to run in behind or hold up the ball to find the feet of the striker. They press from the front to force a long ball and win it back high up the pitch.

A major strength is the ability to create wide overloads when the full backs push up. Malaysia also has great speed of transition because of the high number of attackers. The pair of LONG and QORIY can combine in tight spaces to break the line. This allows the team to isolate wide players in one on one situations and stretch the defence.

This 4-2-4 formation is built for high intensity attacking play. It is best suited for games where Malaysia needs to chase a goal against a low block.
