Auxerre relies on a heavy central presence to control the tempo of the game, utilizing a 2-6-2 formation. This lineup aims to dominate the middle of the park to squeeze the space available to the opponent. By packing the center, the team looks to recycle possession and control the rhythm of the match through constant short passing.

Riou or Baltus stands between the posts to manage the defensive line. The backline is extremely minimal, consisting of just two central defenders, Ndicka or Taribo West or Zelic alongside Mexes. These two must act as ball playing defenders who can step up to intercept passes while being prepared to cover huge amounts of space behind them. Because there are no full backs, these two central defenders must be dominant in the air and possess high positional awareness to defend against direct attacks.

The midfield is the engine of Auxerre, operating as a massive six man block. Sagna acts as the single pivot to shield the two defenders and protect the zone in front of them. Laurent Blanc operates in the center to connect the defense to the attack, while Boumsong and Kaboul provide much needed steel and energy. Diaby and Scifo operate in the half spaces as attacking midfielders, looking to find pockets of space between the lines. This heavy midfield group works to win the second ball and quickly pass it to the forwards.

In the attacking third, the team moves away from a wide focus to rely on two forwards in a partnership. Benjani and Cissé lead the line, looking to work in close combinations to break the line. These two often drop slightly to link up with the advancing midfielders like Diaby or Scifo. The goal is to create central overload situations where the two strikers can turn and play through the lines. They press the opposition back line to force a long ball, allowing the central players to regain possession.

This formation offers significant numerical superiority in midfield, making it very difficult for opponents to play through the center. Auxerre can also use the heavy central presence to squeeze the space in a mid-block, forcing the opposition to play wide where they are less dangerous. The ability to crowd the middle allows the team to win the ball back high up the pitch through coordinated pressing.

The 2-6-2 formation is built for total dominance of the central zones and high ball retention. It is best suited for games against opponents who lack the technical ability to bypass a crowded midfield.
