Barcelona plays with a focus on ball retention and a high press in a 4-5-1 formation. This lineup is built to dominate the ball and squeeze the opposition in their own half. By crowding the middle, the team seeks to control the rhythm of the game through constant passing and rapid ball recovery. The goal is to keep the ball for long periods and force the opponent into mistakes.

Szczesny guards the goal and directs the defensive line. Koundé plays as an attacking full back on the right to support the width, while Alex Balde pushes high on the left to act as an attacking wing back. Ronald Araujo provides aerial strength and pace to cover the space behind the line, working alongside Iñigo Martinez who acts as a ball playing defender to help play out from the back. The back four works to maintain a high line to keep the team compact and squeeze the playing area.

The midfield consists of five players designed to control the center of the pitch. F. de Jong plays as a deep lying playmaker to recycle possession and move the ball forward. Pedri uses his passing range to break the line and find teammates, while Gavi brings immense pressing intensity to win the ball high up the pitch. Raphinha and Lamine Yamal occupy the half spaces, acting as midfielders who can drive forward or cut inside to create danger. This unit links the defense to the attack by moving the ball quickly through the thirds.

The front line features a lone striker, Robert Lewandowski, who acts as a target man to hold up the ball and pin the last defender. He focuses on finding space in the box to finish chances. While he leads the line, Lamine Yamal and Raphinha act as inverted wingers who move from the wide midfield areas into central positions to exploit gaps. They look to play one-two combinations with Lewandowski or whip it in to the far post. The attack is designed to create runs in behind and use link up play between the lines to bypass the midfield.

A significant advantage is the numerical superiority in the midfield which makes it very difficult for opponents to play through the lines. Barcelona also utilizes wide overloads when Koundé and Alex Balde push up to support the wide players. The coordinated pressing from Gavi and the midfield trio allows the team to win the ball back high up the pitch and transition into attack with great speed.

This 4-5-1 formation is ideal for a team looking to suffocate an opponent through central control. It works best against sides that try to build play through a crowded middle.
