Barcelona aims to dominate through extreme ball retention and high territorial control using a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup is built to overwhelm opponents in their own half by creating constant passing lanes and heavy pressure. The goal is to use central superiority to move the ball through the thirds and pin the opposition back.

Diogo Costa starts in goal to sweep behind a very high line. The back line consists of a two man unit featuring Jules Koundé and Pau Cubarsí. Koundé acts as a ball playing defender to initiate play, while Cubarsí provides cover and helps to play out from the back. Because there are only two central defenders, the unit must step up high to squeeze the space and catch attackers in an offside trap.

The midfield functions as a five man block that occupies the entire width of the pitch. Martin Zubimendi acts as the single pivot to shield the defence and recycle possession. Pedri operates as an inverted eight to connect the lines and find the feet of the striker. Alongside him, Florian Wirtz plays as an attacking ten to find pockets of space and create from deep. Alphonso Davies and Jeremie Frimpong act as the wide midfielders who provide the primary width, with Davies occupying the left side and Frimpong covering the right to drive forward with the ball.

In the final third, Barcelona utilizes three attackers to stretch the defence. Viktor Gyökeres acts as a pressing centre-forward to lead the line and win the second ball. Lamine Yamal plays as an inverted winger on the right to cut inside and create, while Dani Olmo occupies the left wing to provide more central presence and link-up play. This front three works to isolate wide players in one on one situations and make runs in behind to exploit gaps.

A major strength of this Barcelona lineup is the numerical superiority in midfield which allows them to control the tempo. The high positioning of Alphonso Davies and Jeremie Frimpong creates wide overloads that force the opposition to shift constantly. Furthermore, the ability to press high in coordinated waves makes it difficult for opponents to build out from the back.

This 2-5-3 formation relies on extreme bravery to dominate possession in the opponent's half. It is best suited for games where the team needs to break down a low block through central combinations.
