The midfield works as a double pivot to control the center of the pitch. Rabi and Adjie operate in the middle to shield the defense and win the second ball. Rabi focuses on the physical side of the game, while Adjie looks to connect the defensive and attacking lines. These two players must work hard to press in a mid-block and prevent the opposition from playing through the lines. They are responsible for recycling possession and finding the forwards quickly once the ball is won.

In the attacking phase, Malaysia uses three attackers across the front to stretch the defense. Derrick plays as a lone striker to hold up the ball and pin the last defender. On the wings, Herbert and Bless act as wide wingers who hug the touchline to create space in the channels. They look to receive the ball in space to run in behind the opposition back line. The team relies on combinations between the wingers and Derrick to exploit gaps, often looking to whip it in or deliver early crosses into the box.

One major advantage for Malaysia is the ability to create wide overloads when Oscar and Jephtar push forward to support the wingers. This formation also provides great compactness when defending, as the five defenders and two midfielders can squeeze the space effectively. The presence of Derrick allows the team to transition quickly, making them dangerous when they can break quickly on the counter.
