Starting Lineup

Lens focuses on a direct and high intensity way of playing. RC Lens utilizes a 4-4-2 formation to maintain a balanced presence across the pitch. RYAN acts as the last line of defense in goal. The defensive unit operates as a flat back four with AGUILAR at right back and MACHADO at left back. In the middle, GRADIT and MEDINA work as the central defenders to protect the box. AGUILAR and MACHADO often push up to overlap the wingers, while GRADIT and MEDINA focus on holding the line and winning headers. They stay narrow to deny the turn of opposition attackers and protect the central area when the team sits deep.

The midfield consists of a four man line that helps control the tempo and win the ball back. EL AYNAOUI and THOMASSON occupy the central roles to manage the middle of the pitch. EL AYNAOUI works to shield the defense and win the second ball, while THOMASSON looks to carry the ball forward and link the lines. ZAROURY and LAINEZ operate as the wide midfielders to provide width and track back when needed. This group works to compress the midfield and trigger a press when the ball enters their zone.

Two forwards lead the charge for Lens with NZOLA and SAID playing as a partnership. NZOLA uses his physical strength to hold up the ball and his clinical finishing to score. SAID works alongside him to make runs in behind and stretch the defense. The attacking unit aims to press the opposition back line to force a long ball. ZAROURY and LAINEZ look to get to the byline and whip it in for the two strikers to attack the far post.

A major advantage of this formation is the ability to press high in coordinated waves. The team can also create wide overloads when the full backs join the attack to create numbers in the wide areas. Another strength is the compactness when defending in a mid-block, which makes it hard for opponents to play through the lines. The speed of transition with the two forwards allows for quick strikes and exploits space behind the defense.
