Starting Lineup

Focusing on a direct and hard working identity, Lens employs a 4-4-2 formation. This lineup aims to stay compact and move quickly when they win the ball back. The team works in a mid-block that allows them to squeeze the space in the middle and force the opponent into wide areas.

VASSEUR stands between the posts to organize the defensive unit. The team operates with a flat back four consisting of POTTIER at right back and CLAUDE at left back. In the center, ROUSSET and HENRY act as the central defenders to hold the line and protect the penalty area. POTTIER and CLAUDE can push up to support the attack, while the central pair of ROUSSET and HENRY focus on winning the second ball and covering any runs in behind. This defensive unit works together to deny the turn to any opposition attackers.

The midfield utilizes a central pairing of BOURGEOIS and MICHAUD to control the middle of the pitch. BOURGEOIS works to shield the defence and win it back high up the pitch when the trigger is pulled. MICHAUD helps to carry the ball forward and connects the defensive and attacking lines. On the flanks, DELORME and PERRIN provide width and must track back to help the full backs. This midfield formation allows the team to compress the midfield and ensure no space is left between the lines.

In the final third, Lens uses a partnership of two forwards with BOCQUET and FOFANA leading the line. The forwards press from the front to disrupt the build up and force long balls. BOCQUET often works to hold up the ball and link up play with the midfielders. FOFANA looks to make runs in behind the opposition back line to exploit space. The wide players, DELORME and PERRIN, can cross from the flanks to find the strikers. This formation is designed to create combinations in tight spaces and use the two strikers to pin the last defender.

One major advantage for Lens is the ability to maintain compactness when defending. The two banks of four make it hard for opponents to play through the lines. Another strength is the speed of transition, where BOURGEOIS or MICHAUD can quickly find the forwards to break quickly. This allows the team to hit in behind the opposition before they can set the offside trap.
