Because of the lack of width in the defensive line, Adam Danish and aryan must cover large areas of the pitch and win the second ball frequently. They are tasked to defend zonally and must be ready to step up and set the offside trap or drop back to cover runners. These two must stay very close together to prevent opponents from playing through the lines.

In the center of the pitch, Aqriem and Farish form a central pairing to control the tempo. Aqriem acts to recycle possession and play short from the back, while Farish works to carry the ball forward and connect the defence to the attack. They are supported by Isyraf and Faris, who occupy the wide midfield roles. Isyraf and Faris must track back to support the defenders but primarily focus on pushing up to provide width. This four man midfield unit works to compress the midfield and force a long ball from the opponent.

The attacking front is composed of four players tasked to pin the last defender. Aidil Arryan and Rafiq play as a central partnership, working to hold up the ball and find the feet of each other. Afif and Harith operate as wide attackers who look to cut inside and create central threats. This front line is designed to press from the front, making it difficult for the opposition to build out from the back. The movements are intended to create runs in behind or allow Afif and Harith to whip it in for the central strikers.

A major strength of this 2-4-4 lineup is the ability to create wide overloads and numerical superiority in the attacking half. With Isyraf, Faris, Afif, and Harith all pushing high, the team can stretch the defence and isolate wide players in one on one situations. Additionally, the coordinated press allows Malaysia to win it back high up the pitch and hit in behind on the transition.
