Lens Football Formation
Starting Lineup
RYAN (78) · MACHADO (76) · MEDINA (80) · DANSO (82) · GRADIT (77) · FRANKOWSKI (77) · SAMED (77) · EL AYNAOUI (78) · DIOUF (77) · SAID (75) · LABEAU-LASCARY (74)To play with a high press and quick transition football, Lens operates with a 5-3-2 formation. The lineup is built to stay compact when defending and hit opponents on the break. By using this formation, Lens can control the middle of the pitch while maintaining enough players back to prevent being caught out.
RYAN stays between the posts to manage the defensive line. The back three consists of MEDINA, DANSO, and GRADIT. DANSO acts as the central defender, often stepping up to intercept or clear the lines. MEDINA and GRADIT cover the spaces to the sides, providing a zonal line that is hard to break. FRANKOWSKI and MACHADO play as attacking wing backs, pushing high to provide width. They must track back to help the defense and double up on wide players when the opposition attacks.
The midfield functions as a three man midfield with a single pivot to control the center. SAMED acts as the player who shields the defense. He sits deep to collect the ball and protect the center. EL AYNAOUI and DIOUF work as central midfielders who drive forward with the ball to connect the defensive and attacking lines. They look to win the second ball and switch play to the flanks. This midfield unit is designed to squeeze the space in the middle and force the opponent to play long.
Up front, the team employs two forwards in a partnership. SAID and LABEAU-LASCARY lead the press from the front, forcing the opposition back line into mistakes. SAID often looks to play through the lines, while LABEAU-LASCARY works to hold up the ball or make runs in behind. The wing backs, FRANKOWSKI and MACHADO, provide the width, allowing the forwards to stay central. This movement is designed to create cutbacks from the byline or deliver early crosses to the far post.
A major advantage for RC Lens is the ability to press high in coordinated waves. The front two and the midfield three can trigger a press to win it back high up the pitch. Another strength is the width offered by FRANKOWSKI and MACHADO, which creates wide overloads when they overlap the winger. The compactness of the five defenders and three midfielders makes the central area very difficult to penetrate.
This 5-3-2 formation provides a solid base for a team that wants to control the center and exploit the flanks. It is best suited for matches against opponents who rely on heavy possession but struggle with speed of transition.
