Auxerre plays a vertical and aggressive style of football in a 2-4-4 formation. This formation focuses on overwhelming the opponent in the final third through sheer numbers. It is built to play with high intensity and constant pressure.

Sinayoko operates between the posts to manage the defensive line. Auxerre uses a very narrow back two consisting of Perrin and Traorè. Perrin acts as a ball playing defender to start attacks, while Traorè is there to cover and win the second ball. This back two must stay tight to prevent central penetration, often requiring them to step up and engage before the opposition can settle.

The midfield is a four man block featuring a double pivot and two attacking midfielders. Danois and Owusu form the double pivot to shield the defense and intercept passes. Danois works to protect the space in front of the center backs, while Owusu can carry the ball forward to drive the team out of defense. Mensah and Hoever play as two tens in the half spaces, looking to link the midfield to the front line. Mensah aims to play through the lines, while Hoever tries to arrive late into the box to add an extra goal threat.

The front line is heavy, using two forwards in a partnership alongside two wide attackers. Jubal and Léon act as the two center forwards, where one can act as a target man to hold up the ball for the others. Akpa plays as an inverted winger on the right to cut inside and create, while Diomandé stays wide on the left to stretch the defense. The goal is to use these four players to pin the last defender and create chaos in the penalty area. They press from the front to force a long ball from the opposition.

One major advantage of this Auxerre lineup is the numerical superiority in the attacking third. By committing so many bodies forward, they can easily create wide overloads and isolate attackers in one on one situations. Another strength is the ability to press high in coordinated waves, using the front four and the two attacking midfielders to squeeze the space and win the ball back high up the pitch.

This 2-4-4 formation is a high risk and high reward system designed for total offensive dominance. It is best suited for games where the team needs to chase a result against a side that sits deep in a low block.
