Auxerre Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Léon (De Percin) · Ayé (Onaiwu) · Perrin (Onaiwu / Soumaré) · Hein · Sinayoko (Perrin / Maddy) · Owusu (Dioussé) · Raveloson (Danois) · Mensah (Akpa) · Pellenard (Agouzoul) · Jubal (Agouzoul) · Joly (Dagba / N'gatta)Seeking to frustrate opponents and strike on the break, Auxerre utilizes a 5-4-1 formation. This lineup is built to stay compact and defend in a low block before looking to hit in behind on the transition. The team prioritizes defensive stability and waits for the right moment to launch vertical attacks. This method is intended to negate the strengths of possession based teams.
Ayé stands between the posts to command the box and clear the lines. The defensive unit features a central trio of Hein, Owusu, and Raveloson who hold the line and win the second ball. Sinayoko and Perrin act as attacking wing backs to provide width during transitions, though they must track back to maintain the five man unit. Raveloson and Owusu cover the space behind the wing backs while Hein stays central to defend zonally. This unit ensures a narrow defensive block that is difficult to penetrate.
In front of the defense, the midfield operates with a double pivot of Jubal and Pellenard, supported by wide players in a four man line. Jubal and Pellenard work to shield the defense and win the second ball in the middle of the pitch. These two players connect the defensive and attacking lines by playing short from the back or looking to break the line with a pass. Joly and Mensah play as wide midfielders to help the wing backs and squeeze the space in the middle. This unit aims to compress the midfield and deny the turn to opposition playmakers.
The attacking phase relies heavily on a lone striker, Léon, who must work as a pressing centre forward. Léon needs to hold up the ball to allow the midfield to move up the pitch. When the team wins the ball, the aim is to find the feet of the striker or hit in behind on the transition. Sinayoko and Perrin push high to provide width and deliver crosses from the byline. The forwards press the opposition back line to force a long ball and win possession high up the pitch.
One major advantage for Auxerre is the compactness when defending in a mid block or low block. By sitting deep, the players limit the space between the lines for the opponent to exploit. The formation also allows for wide overloads when Sinayoko and Perrin step up to support the midfielders. This creates a way to double up on wide players during the transition. Furthermore, the presence of three central defenders makes it very hard for opponents to play through the middle.
This 5-4-1 formation focuses on defensive solidity and quick counter attacks. It is best suited for matches against dominant teams where Auxerre can sit deep and strike on the break.
