Starting Lineup

Norway plays a highly aggressive game built on heavy central pressure and a massive midfield presence using a 2-6-2 formation. This lineup aims to dominate the middle of the pitch and squeeze the opposition in their own half. The plan is to use the sheer numbers in the center to control the game and win it back high up the pitch immediately.

Nyland stays between the posts to organize the small defensive unit. The back line consists of a narrow pair of central defenders, Østigård and Ajer, who must play a high line. Both Østigård and Ajer act as ball playing defenders to play out from the back while one is always ready to sweep behind the line to cover any runners. Because there are only two defenders, they must remain very tight to prevent through balls and win the second ball immediately to stop counters.

The massive midfield is the engine of Norway. It features a three man pivot consisting of Meling, Berge, and Ryerson who sit in front of the defenders to shield the back two. They protect the space and intercept passes to allow the more advanced trio of Nypan, Ødegaard, and Aursnes to push forward. Ødegaard uses his passing range to play through the lines, while Nypan and Aursnes drive forward to connect the lines. This group works to win it back high up the pitch and quickly recycle possession to maintain pressure and break the lines.

In the final third, the team uses two forwards to stretch the opposition. Haaland acts as a powerful runner who looks to hit in behind on the transition, while Sørloth works to hold up the ball and link up play between the lines. They work in combinations to pull defenders out of position and create space. The midfielders arrive late into the box to support the two strikers, creating a central overload that is very difficult to mark in tight spaces.

A major advantage for Norway is the numerical superiority in midfield which allows them to control the tempo. The formation also enables them to press in coordinated waves, making it very difficult for opponents to build out from the back or find a way through. The speed of transition is a key weapon when the central players win the ball and immediately find Haaland or Sørloth in dangerous areas.

This 2-6-2 formation is a high risk, high reward system focused on central domination. It is best used when facing teams that struggle to handle intense pressure in the middle of the park.
