Starting Lineup

Barcelona focuses on controlling the game through a high press and quick ball movement in a 5-3-2 formation. This lineup aims to win the ball back high up the pitch and use the width provided by the wing backs to stretch the opposition. The team relies on technical security to recycle possession and find openings in the opponent's defensive lines.

The goalkeeper begins the build up by playing short from the back to the central defenders. A back five provides a heavy presence in the middle, with MCD acting as the central anchor of the defensive line. DFC on the right and DFC on the left provide cover, while the MCD holds the line to stop runners. LD and LI act as attacking wing backs who push high up the pitch to provide width, while also tracking back to defend the flanks when the team loses the ball.

In the center, the midfield functions with a three man midfield designed to control the tempo. The two MC players occupy the central areas to protect the defense and link play. One MC acts as a carrier to drive forward with the ball, while the other works to pick up runners and press in a mid block. The MCO plays as an attacking ten, operating in the half spaces to find pockets of space between the lines. This trio works together to squeeze the space in the middle and ensure the team remains compact.

The attacking unit uses two forwards to pin the last defender. The two DEL players operate as a partnership, often playing on the shoulder of the last man to make runs in behind. One DEL might act as a target man to hold up the ball, while the other uses their movement to find space. When the team moves forward, the LD and LI overlap the wingers to create wide overloads. The goal is to create combinations in tight spaces and use cutbacks from the byline to catch the defense out of position.

Barcelona gains a massive advantage through the width provided by the wing backs, which often creates numerical superiority on the flanks. The five man defensive line ensures compactness when defending, making it very difficult for opponents to play through the middle.
