Honduras National Football Team Formation
Starting Lineup
MURILLO · MOYANO · VILLALBA · SEPULVEDA · MERCADO · ROMAN · MALDONADO · GIL · CORTES · JARA · CUESTAHonduras plays a game centered on defensive solidity and rapid transitions. They utilize a 4-5-1 formation. This lineup is designed to sit deep and congest the middle of the pitch to frustrate opponents.
MURILLO starts in goal. The defense functions as a flat back four to maintain a compact block. VILLALBA and SEPULVEDA act as the central defenders, with VILLALBA covering the right and SEPULVEDA covering the left. MOYANO plays as the right back and MERCADO plays as the left back. They work to hold the line and ensure they do not get caught by runs in behind. The whole defensive unit shifts together to squeeze the space.
The midfield is a five man unit that controls the central zones. GIL and CORTES act as the central pairing to shield the back four and win the second ball. ROMAN and MALDONADO occupy the wide areas to provide width and track back to help the defense. JARA plays as an attacking ten behind the striker to link the lines. JARA looks to receive on the half-turn and carry the ball forward. This allows the team to progress through the thirds once possession is regained.
CUESTA acts as the lone striker and target man. He works to hold up the ball and find the feet of teammates. ROMAN and MALDONADO stay wide to stretch the defense, which creates gaps in the middle. JARA works in the hole to support the attack. When the team breaks quickly, CUESTA tries to pin the last defender to allow for runs in behind. The team looks to use the wings to deliver crosses or find combinations in tight spaces.
Honduras gains a clear advantage through compactness when defending. The five man midfield makes it difficult for the opposition to find passing lanes through the center. Another strength is the ability to win the ball back high up the pitch when the players trigger a press. The team can also use the speed of transition to catch opponents out of position. By having ROMAN and MALDONADO spread wide, the team can quickly switch play to exploit the flanks.
This 4-5-1 formation is a defensive tool used to absorb pressure and strike on the break. It is best suited for matches against high possession teams that leave gaps in behind.
