Hull focuses on a high press and rapid transitions using a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup is built to win the ball high up the pitch and strike quickly before the opposition can organize. The tactical intent is to overwhelm the middle of the park and use the wide areas to stretch the defence.

Pandur acts as the last line of defence in goal. The back line consists of a narrow pair of central defenders with Ajayi and Hughes. These two must stay compact and cover a lot of space behind them because the team plays with such high intensity. Hughes and Ajayi need to be strong in the air and ready to sweep behind the high line when the opposition looks to hit in behind on the transition. They must hold the line and prevent direct balls from bypassing the midfield.

The midfield is the engine room of this Hull side, operating with five players to dominate the central zone. Lundstram sits as a single pivot to shield the defence and recycle possession. Beside him, Coyle and Giles form a central pair to control the tempo and win the second ball. Matazo and Gelhardt operate in the half-spaces as attacking midfielders to connect the lines. Matazo and Gelhardt are tasked to press aggressively to win the ball high up the pitch and support the front three.

The attacking front three creates constant movement to pin the last defender. McBurnie plays as a pressing centre-forward who can hold up the ball and provide a focal point. He works in a partnership with Millar and Belloumi, who act as wide wingers to provide width. Millar and Belloumi often look to cut inside to create space for the midfielders to arrive late into the box. This front line is designed to attack in combinations and use quick one-two passing to split the defence with a through ball.

One major advantage of this formation is the numerical superiority in midfield, which allows Hull to control the game through the middle. The presence of five midfielders makes it very difficult for opponents to play through the lines. Another strength is the ability to press in coordinated waves, using the front three and the two attacking midfielders to squeeze the space. This creates many opportunities to win it back high up the pitch and catch the opponent out of position.

This 2-5-3 formation is a high-risk, high-reward setup designed for aggressive, vertical football. It is best suited for matches against teams that struggle to play out from the back under heavy pressure.
