Lens Football Formation
Starting Lineup
RISSER (77) · MEDINA (82) · SARR (75) · BAIDOO (73) · BERMONT (71) · THOMASSON (77) · SANGARE (76) · MEIRELLES (77) · SIMA (78) · LABEAU-LASCARY (76) · RIVAS (77)Lens aims to win the ball high up the pitch and strike quickly through a 3-4-3 formation. This lineup is built to play a high press style that forces mistakes from the opposition. By squeezing the space, the team looks to control the game through intense pressure and rapid transitions. This lineup is designed to keep the play in the opponent half.
RISSER protects the goal while the back line operates as a compact three. SARR holds the middle of the defence to win the header and clear the lines. BAIDOO plays as the right centre back to cover the wide areas, and MEDINA sits on the left to defend zonally. These wide centre backs must work with SARR to maintain a narrow defensive block. The three defenders must hold the line and step up together to trigger a press. They work as a single unit to ensure they do not leave gaps behind them.
In the middle of the pitch, SANGARE and THOMASSON form a double pivot. SANGARE works to shield the defence and win the second ball to keep the pressure on. THOMASSON connects the defensive and attacking lines by looking to pass through the lines. MEIRELLES and BERMONT act as the wide players to provide width. MEIRELLES pushes up to overlap the winger on the right, while BERMONT must track back to cover the left side when the team loses possession. This allows the midfield to control the tempo of the game.
The attacking unit uses three attackers across the front to stretch the defence. LABEAU-LASCARY plays as a pressing centre forward to force a long ball from the opposition. SIMA and RIVAS act as wide wingers to provide width and constant threat. SIMA likes to cut inside to attack the near post, while RIVAS looks to get to the byline and deliver early. They work to play through the lines and find the feet of the striker in tight spaces. The goal is to create runs in behind the defensive line.
RC Lens gains an advantage by using the wide players to create wide overloads. When MEIRELLES and BERMONT push high, they pin the last defender and create space for the front three to operate. The team also shows an ability to press in pairs to win it back high up the pitch and catch the opponent on the transition. This creates many opportunities to break quickly.
This formation is a high intensity way to play that relies on heavy pressing and wide attacking plays. It is best suited for games against teams that try to play short from the back and struggle under pressure.
