Starting Lineup

Barcelona aims to control the game through high possession and heavy pressure, utilizing a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup is built to dominate the middle of the pitch and pin the opposition back in their own half. Szchny starts between the posts to organize the defensive line. The back line consists of a staggered back two with Cubarsi and Araujo acting as the central defenders. Araujo uses his recovery speed and aerial strength to cover large spaces, while Cubarsi plays out from the back to start the build up. Because the team uses only two central defenders, they must play a high line and squeeze the space to prevent long balls from getting behind.

A five man midfield provides the engine for Barcelona to move the ball forward. Kounde sits as a right defensive midfielder to shield the defence and provide balance. Balde operates as a left defensive midfielder, often looking to carry the ball forward into the half spaces. De Jong acts as a deep lying playmaker, using his driving runs and passing range to connect the defensive and attacking lines. Pedri operates in the right half space to create chances, while Olmo plays as an attacking ten behind the striker to link play and find pockets of space between the lines.

The attacking unit consists of three players tasked with stretching the defence. Yamal stays wide on the right to isolate his marker and pull the defender out of position. Rashford plays as an inverted winger on the left, looking to cut inside and shoot. Lewandowski acts as the lone striker and target man, holding up the ball to allow the midfielders to join the attack. This front three works to press the opposition back line and create chances through quick combinations in the final third.

This formation offers significant advantages, such as numerical superiority in midfield to win the second ball. The presence of Olmo and Pedri allows for constant passing triangles to bypass the opponent midfield. Additionally, the team can create wide overloads when Balde or Kounde push higher up the pitch to support the wingers.
